Growing Hope, One Seed at a Time

In Round Rock, Texas, something beautiful is happening.

The Palm Valley Lutheran Church Vegetable Gardening Group, led by the dedicated and passionate Helen Becker, is quietly transforming lives through a timeless and simple but powerful act – Gardening. Helen’s personal passion for seed swapping soon blossomed into a growing community outreach program helping families gain access to free seeds, education, and the confidence to grow their own food, even in uncertain times.

How It All Began: Helen’s Journey

Helen participated in seed-swap groups on Facebook for years. She engaged with a passionate community, enjoying the connection sparked by trading seed varieties to expand her own garden (while also not stretching her budget). In time, an idea sprouted.

What if she found a way to bring this same opportunity for connection to her community?

Helen reached out to seed companies, who generously provided free seeds after hearing her plan. She then approached Palm Valley Lutheran Church with her vision.

She dreamt of creating a gardening group open to anyone, where seeds would always be free, and monthly meetings would empower members with gardening know-how.

The church embraced the concept wholeheartedly. The ministry took off and has been flourishing ever since.

Today, members—experienced gardeners and complete beginners alike—attend monthly sessions on diverse (and practical) topics. One month you might learn about soil preparation. The next, composting or seasonal planting. Now, the hot topic is winter-garden protection.

Helen researches each subject and prepares educational materials sent out in advance so attendees can get the most out of each session.

And as Helen says, “Related giveaways are always a plus!”

Meeting Real Needs

More families than ever voice concerns about chemicals in commercially grown produce. Added together, we can see why interest in urban food gardening has exploded. This year, the ministry saw record engagement, and nearly every member planted a fall or winter garden.

But gardening success comes with challenges, especially in regions where freezing temperatures can undo months of hard work. That’s why Helen was thrilled to receive sustainable burlap products from Madi Decor, which will help community gardeners protect their vegetables during cold spells.

Looking Ahead: Teaching Families to Grow Their Own Food

The group is already planning their 2026 January meeting on seed starting, helping families prepare for a successful spring garden. As interest continues to grow, the ministry is becoming an invaluable resource for families facing food insecurity, rising grocery bills, and concerns about nutrition and safety.

This work reflects the wisdom of a timeless truth: When you plant a seed, you plant hope.

We are honored to support this inspiring mission and encourage our community and partners to help spread the word.
