What Are Grow Bags?

Grow bags are a fabric-based alternative to pots. You can grow a variety of plants and produce even in smaller spaces. In practice, they function like a lightweight pot while also delivering on a range of additional benefits for your plants and your home. Grow bags immediately add a rustic, earthy aesthetic to whatever space they are in. While many plants may need to be switched out to the garden or a larger pot eventually, grow bags often can sustain a plant for its entire lifespan due to air pruning.

Burlap Grow Bags

Burlap grow bags are an excellent lower-cost option with solid durability.
Less water retention to help reduce the risk of overwatering plants.
Burlap grow bags provide great airflow for plants that need good aeration and air pruning.

How to Use Your Grow Bag

Using a grow bag is as easy (or easier) than using plant pots. Simply open the bag and fill it with your chosen soil. Add fertilizer (optional), and then plant your seeds (or plant, starts, or saplings).

However, using your grow bag can require some differences in approach with potted plants. Some key differences to keep in mind include:

Enhanced water draining can require a different watering schedule than with potted plants. The soil can dry out more quickly, so keep an eye out for that.
Always be sure to place a saucer or tray beneath the grow bag to collect any water that drains out.
Do not be afraid to replace your grow bag once it shows signs of wear. Rips or tears can lead to uneven aeration. So simply recycle a worn grow bag and replace it with a fresh one to keep your garden at its best.
